How strict are Eurowings with hand luggage?

Just how strict are Eurowings with hand luggage size and weight?

As the first to specialise in short haul flight alerts, it’s a question we’re often asked by our members.

Eurowings are relatively strict and now state that if you’re travelling with hand luggage only, you’ll be allowed to take one main bag on board as well as a smaller personal item. According to them, your main bag must fit in the sizer and so be easily stored in the overhead compartment. Your personal item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.

And if you’re looking for a fully compliant bag which is the perfect fit and great value on Amazon, we recommend this American Tourister suitcase which almost fits to perfection.

Eurowing’s main hand luggage policy

Eurowing’s main hand luggage policy is currently as follows:

55 x 40 x 23 cm (including any wheels or handles)

The limits for weight are 8kg.

Eurowing’s smaller bag policy

In addition to your main hand luggage, each passenger may carry on board a smaller personal item not exceeding the following dimensions:

40 x 30 x 10 cm (including any handles, etc.)

Examples on their website include small handbag or laptop bag for instance, but in reality you could take a bit more than this if you like.

We wouldn’t worry too much if your smaller item is slightly larger than the limits stated above.

As long as it’s a soft bag and easily stored underneath the seat in front of you, you shouldn’t have any issues.

There are no weight restrictions for this particular item, although it certainly needs to be easily carried or you might encounter some problems.

How strict are Eurowings with hand luggage weight?

The weight of your main cabin baggage bag must not exceed 8kg or you may be penalised.

What we can say from our experience however, is that it’s rare for airlines to examine the weight of your hand luggage.

Even still, you should try and stick within the 8kg where possible, but again, don’t worry too much if it’s slightly over!

We always say that, if worst comes to worst and you are slightly over the limits – just be prepared to wear some of your heavy clothing to make up for it.

Think coat with deep pockets if you’re really looking to get your money’s worth!

Eurowings hand luggage liquids

As with all European airlines, you can take all your toiletries through security as long as each bottle contains no more than 100ml each.

They must fit comfortably into one see-through, re-sealable bag.

My main hand luggage is slightly oversized, should I risk it?

There’s only one simple answer to this question, and that is no.

Certainly not if your main bag is that of a hard suitcase, or a hard shell –because you won’t be able to squeeze it into the steel cage should you be required to.

You might get away with it using a soft-edged bag like a backpack, as you might therefore be able to negotiate with the sizer.

But even then, it’s a risk and you might still have to pay extra.

My main hand luggage is slightly overweight, should I risk it?

This is a little bit more feasible and may be worth the risk if you really need the additional weight.

Besides, it’s rare for hand luggage to be weighed these days.

That’s as long as you’re all checked-in online.

If you don’t check in online, it’s more likely you will be asked questions at the desk and you could be asked to place your bag onto the conveyor belt for weighing.

With that said, there’s no guarantee you won’t be checked for weight at the gate, but in our experience, this is rare.

It’s a lot more critical for the airline to ensure a smooth boarding process, and being overly pedantic about weight will not help.

Size is more of a factor because of space issues which is more important than weight.

What’s the penalty if I’m caught out?

If you decide to take the risk and get caught out, the penalties are fairly substantial.

In fact, you could buy yourself compliant bag for less!

If your hand luggage is checked and exceeds the limits – it will be checked into the hold with a fee applied, somewhere in the region of 50 euros.

Conclusion.

The truth is, you just never know how strict they are going to be until the day you travel.

And so we recommend buying a bag which is fully compliant to avoid any problems.

With that said – if you’re going to risk it with Eurowings with an oversized bag – make sure it’s not a hard case as you won’t be able to squeeze this into the sizer.

Otherwise, you’re better off investing in an appropriate bag which is fully compliant with their latest rules.

Not only will you be able to use this bag for all future Eurowings flights, you could also use it for a range of other airlines too!
