Just how strict are Vueling with hand luggage size and weight?
As the first to specialise in short haul flight alerts, it’s a question we’re often asked by our members.
Vueling are relatively strict and state that if you are permitted to board with a full-sized carry on, you’ll be limited to dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. To be able to bring this bag on board, you must book the relevant fare type, or pay extra as a Basic Fare customer.
And if you’re looking for a compliant bag which fits perfectly within limits stated above, we recommend this Maximum Allowance suitcase on Amazon.
Vueling have a fairly standard main hand luggage allowance as follows:
55 x 40 x 20cm – (including any wheels / handles) – weighing no more than 10kg
In order to qualify for the above allowance, you must book the Timeflex fare.
Alternatively, customers with alternative fare types can pay an additional fee to take this cabin bag on board.
Otherwise, you’ll be allowed to drop this bag off free of charge at the check-in desk.
The smaller bag is free for all customers to take on board.
Everything must fit under the seat in front of you, and it must not exceed the following dimensions:
40 x 30 x 20cm
Examples include a small backpack, handbag or an airport purchase.
Like most airlines, Vueling allow you to pack liquids into your hand luggage as long as they are in a container with a volume of no more than 100ml.
In addition to this, all liquids must be held in a transparent, resealable plastic bag – and only one bag is allowed per passenger.
This is the most common question we get when it comes to Vueling’s hand luggage policy.
And there’s only one simple answer.
Rules are rules and if you fail to stick within the limits you run the risk of having to pay extras when you get to the airport.
That’s money that could have been invested in a decent bag for years to come, which would also comply with a wide range of other airlines.
With that said, if you have a soft-sided bag which is only slightly over-sized (like a backpack), there’s a good chance of being able to squeeze it in the sizer, if necessary.
It’s also less likely you’ll be stopped in the first place, as backpacks are generally a lot more “hand luggage friendly”.
On the contrary, if you’re travelling with a suitcase and that’s oversized, whoever is working on the gate might well ask to check the size.
And there won’t be any squeezing that into the dreaded cage!
This is probably the second most common question when it comes to Vueling’s carry on policy.
And we’ll be honest – it’s rare for airlines to investigate the weight of your hand luggage.
However, it’s worth checking the weight just in case, as you should be able to stick within the 10kg limit.
But don’t worry too much if it’s slightly over – just be ready to stick on some of your heavy clothing to bring the weight down in the unlikely event you are checked and over the limit!
It seems as though many people have had fairly bad experiences with Vueling airlines.
In fact, new research suggests the airline is the least punctual airline flying from airports in the UK.
Why is this important?
Well, Vueling have blamed this on the strikes in France among other external factors.
But this also suggests to us that they are prone to causing a little disruption when it comes to operational situations such as hand luggage!
If you’re caught out having excess hand luggage, it will have to go in the hold and you will pay a set fee of around 50 euros.
This hard-shell case is strong and sturdy but surprisingly light and easy to manoeuvre.
It’s available in a whole range of colours, all with sleek designs – and you can get a Maximum Allowance Suitcase on Amazon for a great price.
If you think you might need to pay to have your luggage placed in the hold, here’s the deal:
The price also depends on your destination and where you make the booking.
It’s advisable to book any checked luggage online to save up to 50% compared to doing this at the airport.
Otherwise, you’ll be charged around 50 euros, plus any additional excess baggage fees where applicable.
In conclusion, Vueling have rules which you must adhere to, otherwise you’ll risk having to pay extra.
If you’ve already got a soft-edged bag which is slightly oversized however, you shouldn’t worry about that too much.
Just make sure you leave enough room in your bag to squeeze the content into the rectangular sizer if needs be!
If you’ve got a suitcase which is oversized however, then this could easily cause problems and so we recommend buying a compliant bag like the one above.
If you’re still unconvinced, then we recommend you pay for checked-in baggage.
Hello, I am planning to travel from Rome to Paris via Vueling and I have bought extra hold luggage of 23kg. The dimensions of max size of hold luggage is 155cm however the one I have is ~168cm. Is Vueling too strict about size of paid extra luggage as well?
Hi Rohit, it’s hard to say for sure but that is significantly bigger than the limits stated.
This is the dimensions of my bag: 55 x 40 x 20cm –
How much is the cost of having the bag in the cabin? And how do I pay?
Regards Kurt
Perfect, that’s exactly the same size as the limits stated! You’ll find all that information when booking your flight, the price may vary depending on the route.
