Why we’ve rated them this way

Atmosphere and nightlife.

Maspalomas is one of Gran Canaria’s biggest and longest-established resorts, and it shows in how varied it feels – busy hotel-and-bar strips near the dunes give way to quieter, garden-style residential pockets further back, and the nightlife stretches from casual pubs to late-opening clubs.

Meloneras, just along the coast, is a newer and altogether calmer proposition: built around a single smart seafront boulevard, it’s a place for sunset cocktails and a good dinner rather than a big night out, with a noticeably more polished, resort-hotel feel throughout.

Beaches.

Maspalomas is famous for good reason – its beach runs into the protected Maspalomas dunes, a truly striking stretch of sand that’s one of the most photographed spots in the Canary Islands, with plenty of room for sunbathing, watersports and long walks.

Meloneras’ own beach is smaller and quieter, sheltered from the wind but with a stonier seabed that makes it less ideal for swimming. It’s better thought of as a scenic, low-key spot for a walk or a beachfront drink, with Maspalomas’ main beach only a short stroll away to the east.

Getting around and airport distance.

Meloneras is compact enough to do entirely on foot – its promenade puts hotels, restaurants and the beach within easy walking distance of each other.

Maspalomas is a bigger, more spread-out resort, so while the main strip near the dunes is walkable, you may want a taxi, local bus or hire car to reach the further-flung parts of the resort or explore beyond it.

Meloneras is very slightly further from the airport, at around 36km (25-30 minutes) compared with Maspalomas’ roughly 32km (20-25 minutes) – a small difference either way.

Accommodation mix.

We’ve based this section on TUI’s hotel listings for each resort. As one of the biggest UK operators, flying from airports right across the country and covering Gran Canaria extensively, their range gives a good, representative read of what’s available.

Maspalomas’ list is very mixed: alongside conventional hotels there’s a real concentration of bungalow, apartment and villa-style self-catering complexes, and a handful of upscale, higher-rated properties too rather than just budget stays.

Meloneras looks very different – it’s overwhelmingly hotel-led, with most properties carrying TUI’s own top-tier quality badge, whilst self-catering is very much the exception here.

Price.

Maspalomas tends to work out better value overall, largely because its strong self-catering presence gives budget-conscious travellers a lot more choice alongside its pricier hotels.

Meloneras is consistently the more expensive of the two – its accommodation leans heavily towards upmarket resort hotels, so there’s little in the way of a budget option.
