Just how strict is Finnair with carry on?
Well, here’s everything you need to know, including ways you can mitigate the risk of being caught out.
Finnair are relatively strict and state that most passengers are limited to one full-sized carry on and one personal item. Your carry on must be fit in the sizer and so be easily stored in the overhead compartment. And your personal item must be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Finnair’s latest carry on policy is as follows:
55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm (22 in x 16 in x 9 in)
If you’re a business class passenger or have any other sort of priority membership you can take two pieces of carry on, with a little extra weight which will we will cover shortly.
All other passengers can take just one piece of carry on, with the same dimensions as above.
As well as the above, Finnair allow you to bring on one personal item too which must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 15cm (16in x 12in x 6in).
Examples on their website include small backpack or handbag, so this leaves you with even more room to fit some essentials in!
Business class passengers or those with priority memberships can take a maximum combined weight of 10g (22 lb.).
Other passengers are allowed a maximum weight of 8kg (17.5 lb.).
With all that said, we wouldn’t worry too much if the combined weight of your carry on and personal item slightly exceeds the limits above.
Besides, it is rare for airlines to investigate the weight of these items, as long as you’re all checked in online!
This way there’s less chance of being asked any questions by the staff.
Even still, you should try and stick within the limits if possible.
But if by chance you are slightly over and get checked – just be prepared to repack and wear some of your heavier clothing through the gate!
It’s more likely Finnair will be checked the size of your carry on rather than weight.
These restrictions are more important because there is only so much space in the overhead compartments.
This will ensure safety and comfort throughout the cabin.
We therefore recommend a compliant bag, unless you have a soft-sided bag which is only slightly over.
In this instance you might still be able to squeeze your luggage into the sizer, and so you’ll probably get away with it!
Finnair have rules which you must adhere to, otherwise you may have to pay extras at the gate.
What’s more, your oversized luggage is likely to be placed in the hold which is inconvenient for those looking for a speedy exit out the airport!
We therefore do not recommend taking any chances and investing in a Maximum Allowance Suitcase.
